Eje Cafetero

The three departments of Colombia that make up the “coffee axis” are: Risaralda, Caldas and Quindio. Quindio is located in the south of Colombia, and it is a magnificent green paradise every green you can imagine exists somewhere in Quindio. Despite the fact, that the price of coffee fell down for a few years and seriously affected the people of this region, they are still working on improving the quality of the coffee and their independence from corporate exporters.

Verde Inmaculado

The “bosque de niebla” (fog forest) is the perfect climate for growing mild and flavored coffee. Green is all you can think.

Variedad Colombia

For decades the coffee plant “Variedad Colombia” has been grown in this region; however, today coffee plantations are asked to cultivate different varieties of coffee plants. Let’s wait for the beautiful red “cerezos” in March.

Fauna: not native but traditional

Pijao, Quindio

The Pijaos were fearless people, who with their cannibalistic practices scared the conquistadors and kept them out of their lands for a while until the Spanish guns finished them. This is the town in southern Quindio name after this indigenous community.

Colonial Paisa

The town of Pijao is built following the traditional Paisa (name given to somebody or something from the Eje Cafetero region) architecture: Bright colors and a fusion of Spanish and Arab styles.

Willies

The most reliable transportation in this region is the jeep "Willies".

Arepas de maiz amarillo

Doña Fanny wakes up everyday really early and grinds the yellow corn that she would use for making her “arepas” down at Pijao’s central plaza.
